It's one of the freshest things to come to network TV since Saturday Night
Live,
with tremendous
apologies to Wayne Brady, who may be the male equivalent of the all time improve
comic, the Great Carol Burnett. Somehow despite Brady's genius, ABC's
Whose Line Is It Anyway faded from the national spotlight to the Family Channel
and Brady continues to toil in relative obscurity.
Bring on the new Thank God You're Here, where every sketch starts with those
words, featuring 4 celebrity guest stars each week and host David Alan Greer
along with "Judge" Dave Foley, (whose function bears no resemblance whatsoever
to what Drew Carey does on Whose Line) along with a cast of perky, energetic
regulars who are the only ones in on the script. The guest stars fend for
themselves and hope to win the cheezy plastic award given away at the end of
each show by a properly unimpressed Foley.
The show is based on an Australian show.
Episode 1
April 9 2007
Wayne Knight-played a modern day snake oil salesman
Brian Cranstan-A British Rock Star and later a
gayish superhero
Joel McHale-Egyptial Pyramid Explorer Indiana Jones
Style. He is MUCH better on The Soup.
Jennifer Coolidge-Beauty Queen Contestant and
superhero who apparently farts dangerous golden doughnuts
Winner-Cristan
Episode 2
April 9 2007
Mo'nique-Clueless Gameshow hostess
Kevin Nealon-Alpine mountain climbing expedition
leader who gave us, as Foley put it, "chick on chick CPR" in his first sketch
Edie McClurg who played a funny wife in marriage
counseling
Richard Kind-Just plain awful...perhaps put there
to illustrate how hard improve can be-as a morning show sound effects guy.
GOOD JOB by the cast to nail the ZOO radio format.
Winner-Monique
Regular Cast Members
Episode 3
April 16
Jason Alexander (Seinfeld)
Harland Williams (Dumb & Dumber)
Brian Posehn (The Sara Silverman Program)
Jane Lynch's (Best in Show)
WINNER-Harland
Episode 4
April 18
my review as follows:
"Above
average"
Made me laugh a few times//made me horny once!
...worth the time
Shannon Elizabeth does something with a banana
that you will want to slow down and watch frame
by frame. You still have the uncomfortable
feeling that so much of this has been done
before..and each one of these shows has a
ringer...someone you might not know too well,
but who knows his or her way around improv ...
and in this episode it was the eventual winner
Chelsea Handler. People who give this show at
least one chance should give it at least two
chances because it is a hit or miss proposition,
much like SNL, but when it hits, like SNL, it's
worth it

Shannon Elizabeth Does something with a
banana that you will want to slo mo replay
Tom Green breaks things
George Takei first to say THANK GOD IM HERE to lead
a sketch
Chelsea Handler VERY FUNNY
Handler was the winner
Episode 5
Tom Arnold-To channel the words of Don
Rickles "what a hockey puck." What a tool and he won ..what
has this guy got, dirt on everyone in Hollywood. SOOOO stupid. His
premises were totally off base, and yet praised. I hate him..I do..I really do.
Fred Willard -Always solid in improv.
Fran Drescher-Was clearly the best there in improv.
interacted well.
Angela Kinsey-as I have said before ...a ringer is
on this show everytime ...someone you don't know that well but is known in the
comedic world to be good at improv. Edie McClurg, Chelsea Handler,
and Jennifer Cooldige in earlier episodes played that role. Kinsey shined.
If this show continues, I look for the likes of Kinsey to be regulars on the
show.
